PSHE

At Primary, our PSHE curriculum aims to provide children with the confidence and understanding of where they fit into and contribute to the world. We aim to support all children, of all backgrounds, to become healthy, responsible members of society.

Our curriculum provides opportunities for our pupils to learn about their fundamental rights as children and the responsibilities they have. We celebrate differences in our diverse local and global communities and aim to challenge stereotypes. We encourage pupils to develop their self-worth and intrinsic purpose by considering their dreams and goals. We aim to give all children the knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and health. Our pupils are considered leaders and provided with a wealth of opportunities to positively contribute to school life.

The RSE curriculum we deliver is vital in developing the personal social, moral, and spiritual development of our pupils. We provide our children with lifelong knowledge of emotions and healthy relationships.  Ultimately, we strive to equip all children with the skills to live successful adult lives.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is taught weekly, using Jisgsaw, a rigorously planned and DfE approved scheme of work that ensures thorough coverage of the National Curriculum. The spiral curriculum design deepens children’s knowledge year on year leaving pupils with secure subject knowledge by Year 6.

Our PSHE aims to on developing the “whole child” through six main overarching themes:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Differences
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Our flexible teaching of PSHE is responsive and dynamic to the changing needs of our pupils. We are flexible in adding tailored learning opportunities, planned by the teachers who know the children and their families best.

Years 7 - 13

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is an important and necessary part of all students’ education and every year group at Merchants’ Academy receives continual PSHE education throughout the year through the weekly tutorial programme. PSHE equips students with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. There are no internal or external examinations for PSHE.

PSHE is delivered through tutor time and also assemblies. The Academy uses external agencies, both public and private, as much as possible to help the students get access to experts in particular fields.
