Assessment for Learning

Feedback to students should be based around shared learning objectives

In every Learning Session:

  • Lesson objectives are referred to/discussed orally and written on the board.
  • During the Learning Session, learning objectives are reinforced.
  • During the plenary learning objectives are revisited to assess learning.

During a module:

  • Learning objectives are reviewed (with peers and students) to inform future planning.

Feedback makes explicit the outcomes for all individuals in the class

In every learning session:

  • Students are aware of the success criteria
  • Students are clear as to the extent to which they will they will have the opportunity to develop good habits or learning and specific skills

During a module:

  • Students are able to access level descriptors and exemplars to show the level at which they are working and can move towards.

Feedback encourages students to reflect on themselves and their peers as learners

During a module:

  • There are opportunities for students to discuss their progress with other students.
  • There are opportunities for students to assess their own work and the work of others, against student friendly level descriptors.
  • There are opportunities for students to assess against formative comments and summative data.
  • There are opportunities to reflect on their learning experiences.

Feedback is readily accessible and meaningful within learning sessions

During every learning session:

  • Teachers use a variety of questions through questioning strategies to assess and develop the students’ understanding.
  • Questions are related to the learning objectives.
  • Teachers provide students with suggestions, which invite response.
  • Teachers provide motivational feedback.

During the course of the module:

  • Teachers are able to relate to feedback they have given to students in previous learning sessions.
  • Feedback guides students towards the objectives and outcomes of the module.

Feedback informs the next steps for student progression

During the course of the module:

  • Students are given formative comments which identify what has been done well and what still needs improvement, and guidance given on how to make that improvement.
  • Teachers will apply the marking for literacy policy when marking students work
  • Students are clear as to what the next steps are.

During the course of the year:

  • Students are given regular feedback on their progress in relation to the development of the Academy characteristics for good learning and are clear about the next steps to development of these capacities.

Feedback informs attainment

During the course of a module:

  • Students are given an indication of their current attainment in relation to  national standards (KS3 levels, GCSE predictions)

During the course of the Year:

  • Student attainment informs planning and teaching.
