“Work together, win together”

As Head of Castle House I want to focus on creating and promoting a positive house identity and spirit.

Of course, everyone is different and it’s important for each young person to be aware of their strengths and areas to improve (as in life). As a House we have a vast array of talent amongst us, both students and staff alike. This is in academic subjects, sport, art, music and more. If we can continue to work hard to identify our individual and collective strengths then we can build upon and develop these further, enabling us to be the best we can be.

I want to develop a team that believes in itself, strives to achieve the best it can and that has lots of fun in the process!

Head of Castle House:

I began my teaching career at Withywood School in 2004, and I am delighted to have been involved in the transition to Merchants’ Academy.  We have come a long way and taken many positives steps towards our goals but we want to be even better – and working together will help us to achieve this.

Being a PE teacher, it will probably come as no surprise to you, that I firmly believe in the importance of teamwork and competition.

I thoroughly endorse all the positive aspects that sport can bring: a real sense of focus, teamwork and commitment to name just a few. I particularly enjoy running having run for a number of years in Bristol Half Marathons in support of our chosen charity, based here in Bristol. Netball is also a sport I love and have played competitively for nearly five years.

Update:

There have been many positives happening in and around the Academy involving Castle House students and staff: success in lessons for excellent effort and work produced, great participation and results in Inter-House competitions and a real sense of teamwork which is fantastic to see!  Co-Curricular activities are well attended and our Castle House team put in some great efforts in this year’s Sports Day, particularly from our year seven and eight students, well done to all!

The year ahead:

There will be more Inter-House competitions this year with plenty of opportunities to get involved. We will be focussing on the Arts, so if you fancy getting into some music, drama, singing or dancing, please let me know and watch this space for more details.

Our chosen house charity:

Penny Brohn Cancer Care, based here in Bristol.  A very worthy cause that is close to my heart and one the students and staff in our House fully support.

House Council:

Massive thanks and appreciation to all students who have been involved in council meetings and all the ideas contributed to date.  Student voice is hugely important so if you would like to get involved please see me! Meeting details will follow.

International link:

We are currently pursuing a potential link with a school based in Kenya. This will enable students in Castle House the opportunity to have some insight into African culture. They will hopefully be able to become ‘pen pals’ with the students there so they can form friendships over time and gain some real understanding of school life in another country.
