Behaviour management
At Merchants’ Academy, we believe that all students should be part of a well-ordered community that is conducive to learning for all students. This is usually achieved by positive discipline where staff strive to accentuate and reinforce all that is positive. Nonetheless, occasionally sanctions may be imposed upon a student who fails to respect the rights of others to learn, and to be happy and safe.
Sanctions may take the form of the following:
- Teacher detentions
- Head of Year/Curriculum Area detentions
- Report card
- Parked in another class to continue with work
In extreme circumstances, we may also:
- Isolate a student in Timeout (where work will be provided).
- Fixed term exclusion
- Permanent exclusion.
- Alternative education programme.
We also realise that a few students will need support to achieve good behaviour for learning and to that end, may well allocate a keyworker to mentor a student through a difficult patch. At all times, we endeavour to communicate and work with parents in supporting a student where there are difficulties.
