Learning to learn

Learning to learn

All year 7 and 8 students undertake our “learning to learn” programme, which is based on the Personal Learning and Thinking skills (PLTS). We recognise that students need to understand how they learn, as well as what they learn, and it is our aim that all students by the end of KS3 have a clear understanding of their learning strengths and areas for improvement.

This programme focuses on developing the students’ abilities in the following areas:-

  • Being a literate learner – for example understanding the best ways of communicating in order to learn
  • Being an Independent enquirer – for example carrying out independent research and taking responsibility for the learning
  • Being a Creative thinker – for example finding creative solutions to problems
  • Being a Self manager – for example managing time and self in order to achieve
  • Being an Effective participator – for example getting involved and being part of a team
  • Being a Reflective learner – for example reviewing how they have learnt and how they could improve

This programme will be primarily delivered through tutor time, and will be supported through extended tutor times and through each curriculum area. Students will be given a “passport” which will be used to indicate their level – bronze, silver or gold.

Please speak to your child’s tutor if you would like more information on their progress towards these skills.
