Literacy

We all understand the importance of good literacy skills in enabling young people to be successful at school and in the wider world, but how can you encourage your child to make reading a part of their everyday routine?

Here are ten tips for getting your teen into reading!

1. Find out what they like: discovering the authors, genres or stories that your child already enjoys could help you to select new books for them.

2. Read with them: showing an interest in the books that they might already be reading, and getting them to read to you whilst you ask questions, is a excellent way to check their understanding and enjoyment.

3. Show them you take pleasure in reading: reading books yourself will help to show your child the relevance and importance of reading.

4. Visit a library or bookshop to explore the books available.

5. Switch off the TV or computer to spend time reading instead.

6. Complete puzzles and play word games to improve spelling and knowledge of vocabulary.

7. Newspapers, magazines, quality online content: reading any non-fiction texts all counts.

8. Check out the recommended reads section on this website. It divides texts up into subject groups, making choosing texts of interest far easier.

9. Take a look at these websites to explore which are the very best books that your child could be reading:

CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Award

Red House book award

Costa Book Awards

Waterstones
