Art

Art is taught to all year groups from KS3 to KS5. There are three specialist art teachers who deliver lessons in three large, dedicated art rooms. The focus for work differs from year group to year group, but all lessons aim to nurture and develop artistic ability in ALL students.

Business Studies

Business studies is a powerful subject which can change the way we see and interact with the world around us. We are affected by business organisations every second of the day, from the work place in which we invest our time and energy to the clothes we wear. Having a better understanding of how a business works can allow us to make wiser choices in our personal lives and our careers.

Drama

Drama is taught as a specialist subject at Merchants’ Academy and is currently delivered by two full time Performing Arts teachers, Mrs Hulme and Mr Hamill.

English

English is an exciting subject that offers something for everyone from KS3 to KS5. The English Curriculum Area prides itself on providing personalised lessons, tailored to individual needs and strengths.

Hairdressing

At the Academy, we are fortunate enough to be able to allow our students to experience genuine work experience through life in a hairdressing salon.

Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is a popular and highly successful subject and one which we are proud to teach at Merchants’ Academy. The subject is taught to students in both KS4 and Sixth Form.

Humanities

We believe Humanities help create well-rounded, adaptable and socially aware individuals and therefore the subject is considered vital to the development of all students within Merchants’ Academy. A wide variety of teaching and learning techniques are adopted to engage and motivate the students we teach.

ICT

Over the last 50 years ICT has transformed not only the way we communicate but the way we live. Most jobs now require people to have significant skills in ICT. The courses we offer at Merchants’ Academy allow all students to develop specialist knowledge in a range of subjects

Mathematics

The understanding and use of mathematics is fundamental to everyday life.

Mathematical calculations are required everyday in the use of money, the planning of projects and throughout household and business budgeting. Tables, charts and graphs are widespread in the presentation of information, from bus and train timetables to sales brochures and business analyses.

Modern Foreign Languages

All students in Years 7 and 8 study a modern foreign language and go through an options procedure at the end of their second year of study.

Music

Music at Merchants’ Academy stretches the imagination, builds confidence and develops creativity and independent learning. Music trains students to follow detailed instructions, develops their ability to think logically, analyse situations and solve problems.

Physical Education

At Merchants’ Academy we aim to use sport and physical education to develop students’ physical competence and confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of fun and exciting activities.

Science

Science is about trying something new, asking questions and exploring how things work. At Merchants’ Academy we encourage all staff and students to explore new concepts and be innovative in their approaches to investigating theories.
